What the work involves
Fascias are the boards along the edge of the roof that carry the guttering. Soffits close off the underside of the eaves, and bargeboards finish the sloping edges of a gable. Together they make up your roofline, and when they are timber they need regular painting to stop them rotting.
Replacing them usually means removing the old boards, checking the rafter ends behind for rot, and fitting new UPVC fascias, soffits and bargeboards. Ventilated soffits can help airflow into the loft, and the bottom edge of the roof can be supported with an eaves protection system so the felt does not sag and hold water. New guttering is normally fitted at the same time.
Signs your roofline needs replacing
- Paint that is flaking and timber that looks dark, split or soft
- Boards that move or crumble when pressed
- Gutters pulling away because the fascia behind has rotted
- Gaps under the eaves where birds, wasps or squirrels get in
- Staining or damp just below the roofline
- Repeated repainting that never seems to last
How Ben approaches it
Ben will look at the condition of the existing timber and the roof edge and explain what needs replacing. Where rafter ends or the bottom row of tiles need attention, it is far easier to put them right while the boards are off.
UPVC comes in a range of colours and finishes, so you can match the windows and doors or freshen up the look of the house. You will get a clear, free quote covering the boards, any guttering and the finishing details, and the site will be left tidy once the work is done. If you are planning a new roof, it is worth doing the roofline at the same time while the scaffold is up.
